Surgical Services

Southern Research maintains a comprehensive range of chronic surgical models to assist clients with research protocols. In addition, we offer our clients the capability of developing new, customized models for emerging research, including the formulation of complete study designs that incorporate novel surgical strategies and approaches when needed.

Our state-of-the-art surgery suite features advanced instrumentation and technology in two distinct operating theatres. Separate entrances and preparation areas for surgeons and animals, including defined traffic flow patterns, ensure optimal surgical standards and protocols.

The highly trained Southern Research surgical staff is comprised of veterinary surgeons and licensed veterinary surgical technicians. These skilled professionals are experienced in performing a wide variety of soft tissue and orthopedic procedures in multiple species, including:

  • Rodents (mice and cotton rats)
  • Dogs
  • Nonhuman primates
  • Rabbits
  • Ferrets
  • Hamsters
  • Guinea pigs
  • Micro-pigs

Our surgical capabilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Implantation of DSI Telemetry devices in dogs
  • Medical device implantation and monitoring
  • Implantation/introduction of devices or test article into virtually any body cavity or organ system
  • Stereotaxic procedures for intracranial dose administration
  • Laparoscopic deposition of test article anywhere in the abdomen
  • Endoscopic test article administration into the stomach or proximal small intestine of large animals
  • Wound models for external or internal wounds
  • Thoracic surgery (pulmonary or cardiovascular)
  • Microsurgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
