Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department has twelve senior staff members who have basic research programs in various aspects of drug discovery. Currently, most of the research in the department is focused in three primary disease areas: cancer, infectious diseases, and CNS/neurological diseases.

The staff has extensive interactions with medicinal chemists in the Medicinal Chemistry Department and the multi-million dollar High-Throughput Screening (HTS) Center at Southern Research, and supports a laboratory devoted to enzymology. In addition, the staff has various academic appointments and interactions with The University of Alabama at Birmingham, which is adjacent to the Southern Research campus. The research in the department is primarily supported by basic research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense, although a significant portion of the research is supported by government and commercial contracts.
