CLEANER PLANET

Southern Research Energy & Environment

We are a leading non-profit research organization focused on innovative technology solutions for clean energy, clean air, and clean water.

  • We objectively assess new technologies and provide process development support to private sector clients, including inventors, technology providers, and financial investors.
  • We develop and test air and water emissions control technologies for leading electric power utilities, industrial manufacturers, municipal water utilities, and related trade organizations.
  • We partner with private sector firms and government agencies to develop new to the world technologies that transform energy generation, chemical synthesis, and air and water purification.

How To Work With Us

  • Consulting Services – We work with private sector and government clients on technology due diligence and technoeconomic analysis by objectively assessing technologies on paper and in practice. We also provide technical and engineering support throughout the technology development process.
  • Field Verification and Testing Services – We complete lab and site validation of new processes and equipment in our facilities and at client locations by field testing and verifying critical process technologies that underpin their businesses. We support this work with a full complement of lab analytical testing services.
  • Learn About Water Research

  • Technology Development – We develop our own patented technologies that are available for licensing, and we partner with clients to develop new technologies to solve critical clean energy, water, and air problems and transform energy generation, chemical synthesis, and air and water purification.

Energy & Environment Capabilities

Consulting Services

We work with private sector and government clients to objectively assess energy, water, and chemical technologies on paper and in practice. Our team uses advanced process modeling, technoeconomic analysis, and process prototyping to evaluate technical and financial feasibility of new technologies. We also provide technical and engineering support throughout the technology development process.

Technology Development

We develop patented technologies that are available for licensing, and we partner with clients to develop new technologies to solve critical clean energy, water, and air problems and transform energy generation, chemical synthesis, and air and water purification.

Combustion Research Facility/Mercury Research Center:
From early developments in baghouse filtration and electrostatic precipitation to more recent work on reducing mercury emissions from coal combustion, our team in Birmingham, Alabama, has a rich history of developing technologies for emissions reduction in combustion flue gases.

Water Research Center:
Our team in Cartersville, Georgia, evaluates biological and chemical process technologies for water treatment, reuse, and conservation in large sale manufacturing processes. The team focuses on measuring and controlling water quality in high water volume consume processes including electric power generation, mining, metals production, oil and gas production, oil refining, pulp and paper production, and chemical manufacturing.

Advanced Energy and Chemical Technologies:
Our team in Durham, North Carolina, develops diverse chemical process technologies for conversion of traditional fossil feedstocks (oil, coal, and natural gas) as well as renewable (biomass and sugar) and waste (municipal solid waste and recycled polymers) to energy, fuels, and chemicals. Our team are experts in XtL processes (including liquefaction and gasification), catalyst development and testing, and biofuels and biochemical development and processing at the lab and pilot scale. Our team has extensive experience in process development and scale-up from the bench to ton per day demonstration scale production levels.
